Nielsen puts NBC's primetime NBA opener at 6 million viewers, short of TNT's 2010 record
NBC called 76ers-Knicks the most-watched NBA tip-off primetime game ever, at 7.7 million on NBC and Peacock. Nielsen puts the game at 6 million on NBC.

For the second time in a week, Nielsen has published a note clarifying an NBC press release on audience figures. On October 29, 2026, the measurement company said the NBA's opening-night game between the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers “delivered 6 million viewers on NBC on October 20.” By Nielsen's data, the most-watched opening-night game is still the 2010 tip-off between the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics, which drew 7.3 million viewers on TNT.
NBC Sports had announced on October 22 that the game averaged a Total Audience Delivery, or TAD, of 7.7 million viewers on NBC and Peacock, making it “the most-watched NBA Tip-Off primetime game ever.” NBC said the figure combined official Nielsen Big Data + Panel data with digital data from Adobe Analytics, and that it was 5% above the previous record of 7.3 million for Heat-Celtics in 2010, which NBC lists as airing on TBS and TNT. NBC also said viewing peaked at 9.1 million between 9:45 and 10 p.m. ET, as the 76ers closed out the win.
Two counts of one game
| Game | Where | Average viewers | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 76ers-Knicks, October 20, 2026 | NBC and Peacock | 7.7 million (TAD) | NBC Sports: Nielsen Big Data + Panel and Adobe Analytics |
| 76ers-Knicks, October 20, 2026 | NBC | 6 million | Nielsen |
| Heat-Celtics, 2010 opener | TNT (NBC says TBS and TNT) | 7.3 million | Nielsen; NBC cites the same figure |
| Rockets-Thunder, 2025 opener | NBC and Peacock | 5.9 million (TAD) | NBC Sports |
The two figures for this year's primetime opener are 1.7 million viewers apart, about 22% of NBC's total (our calculation). Nielsen's note gives a single number for the NBC broadcast and does not mention Peacock or Adobe. NBC's release, for its part, does not say how much of the 7.7 million came from Peacock or from the Adobe data, so the gap cannot be split from either document.
The record claim also rests on that choice. NBC set its 2026 total, which includes Peacock and Adobe's digital data, against the 7.3 million that Nielsen gives for the 2010 game. Nielsen's note sets the NBC broadcast alone against the same 2010 figure, and on that basis the record stands.
The rest of NBC's opening night
Nielsen's note addresses only 76ers-Knicks. NBC reported the rest of its opening tripleheader on the same TAD basis. It said the primetime doubleheader of 76ers-Knicks and Thunder-Spurs averaged 6.4 million, the most-watched primetime NBA tip-off doubleheader on record, which NBC dates to 1995, and up 14% from last year's 5.6 million. Thunder-Spurs averaged 4.8 million, and an afternoon game between the Celtics and the Detroit Pistons averaged 2.5 million, which NBC called the most-watched weekday afternoon regular-season game ever, excluding holiday games. Across the three games, NBC put the average at 5.1 million.
A pattern in October
The NBA note follows the same pattern as Nielsen's October 26 note on the WNBA Finals. There, Nielsen put Game 1 on October 17 at 1.76 million viewers on NBC, while NBC had announced a TAD of 2.1 million across NBC and Peacock and called it the most-watched Game 1 ever. By Nielsen's data, ESPN's Game 1 on October 3, 2025, with 1.86 million, still holds that record. Our report on that game sets out how the two kinds of count are built.
Both of Nielsen's notes give their source as Nielsen Big Data + Panel national TV measurement, which Nielsen says combines viewing data from set-top boxes and smart TVs with a panel of real people. In both cases, a record on NBC's combined count was not a record on Nielsen's count of the broadcast, so the measure behind a claim matters when comparing networks.
Amazon, which carries NBA games on Prime Video, said on October 29 that the season-opening doubleheader of the package's second season drew more than 2 million U.S. viewers, according to Nielsen (our report).
